Wettest June in Hobart for 55 years

04 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
RESIDENTS of Hobart have just experienced their wettest June in 55 years, according to weatherzone.com.au.

The city picked up a whopping 144mm throughout the month, significantly above the long term normal of 54mm. This made it the wettest June since 1954 and the sixth wettest June on record.

It was a wet month across the entire southeast of the state. For example, Dover received 192mm, its highest total for June in 74 years of records.

"June was dominated by a strong ridge of high pressure lying to the south of Tasmania, directing moist easterly winds onto the east coast of the island. This position of the ridge is very unusual for this time of year – normally high pressure lies over the mainland during winter, resulting in westerly winds across Tasmania," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

"We are expecting the next few months to remain close to or slightly wetter than normal across Tasmania. Temperatures are likely to stay close to average," Pearce said.

Temperatures were much closer to normal. Hobart had an average maximum of 12 degrees, right on the long term normal. However, on the 15th, the city struggled to a top of just nine degrees, making it the coldest June day in two years.

The nights were slightly warmer. Hobart had an average minimum of six degrees, slightly above the long term normal of five. In fact, on the morning of the 5th, the mercury did not fall below 12 degrees, making it the warmest June night in seven years.

Warm nights were a feature right along the east coast. For example, Scamander had an average minimum of seven degrees, its highest for June in 27 years of records.

"The warmer nights across Tasmania during June can be put down to the increased cloud cover, rainfall and humidity as a result of the persistent easterly winds," Pearce said.

When both daytime and overnight temperatures were combined, Hobart’s average temperature came in at nine degrees, right on the long term normal.
