Wind farm deadline looms in Victoria

Wind farm deadline looms in Victoria

03 Oct, 2011 08:57 AM
THE backers of several major wind farms in Victoria will have to start work on projects in tough financial circumstances or face losing their planning permits.

Wind farm development has stalled recently, largely due to the low renewable energy certificate (REC) price. Wind farm operators rely on selling RECs to utilities and big energy users who need them to meet legal requirements to buy low-emissions power, reports The Australian Financial Review.

At the same time, the Victorian government has brought in tough planning rules for wind farms. As part of the transition to the new rules, the government has told operators holding expiring permits that they must start work by March next year or they will have to reapply under the new regime.

An analysis of existing permits, provided to The Australian Financial Review, shows companies with wind farms totalling 358 turbines and with an output capacity of 712 megawatts will need to make that call.

Clean Energy Council strategy director Kane Thornton said most existing permits would not pass the new regulations. "The REC price is lower than what it needs to be to commercialise wind projects," he said.

Senior ministers often refer to existing approvals for wind farms when asked about the government's commitment to reducing Victoria's dependence on coal.

"The government constantly says how over 1000 turbines already have permit approval, but a third of those could expire in the next six months and then half of the rest in the year after that," Greens leader Greg Barber said. "By the time the next election rolls around, they will have all but wiped out the industry."

What a joke, they should be made to comply with the updated guidelines now not next year. Under the new rules 90% of Victoria is still available. But no they want to be in populated areas. Which will provide the legal people with years of class actions by neighbors. The sad part we will all pay through the grid.

Here in Alberta Canada we have wind farms in the south of the Province, which is very windy.

Every year the number of birds killed going through the wind mill blades is quite staggering. Two years ago the number of fatalities was 35,000 birds per year. There are now more turbines so you can imagine that the numbers have increased. There are now no bats in this region, they have been wiped out by the wind mills. Clean energy? I think not!

Thanks, Albertan, it is the same story everywhere but the climate cretins are in, wait for it, denial.

I live in Yass NSW, and I am continuously battered by thumping, vibrations, and the most disgusting annoying types of low frequency noise from Acciona's turbines 35km away at Gunning. Wish the industry implodes and justice be done for all the environmental damage and nuisance these things cause. The wind industry has mislead governments and the public and they should be made to pay for this!

Where do you folks get your electricity from? Burning gas and coal? I suppose you would love to have coal mines and coal seam gas fracking next door, you gotta get your power from somewhere after all. Or do you think it should all be off in out-of-sight working class communities with coal dust and cancer so you don't have to think about it?
