Labor heartland fears apathy if Brumby is re-elected

22 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
PREMIER John Brumby faces a fight in Labor's heartland, where voters fear the ALP will be complacent and apathetic and will ''carry on doing nothing'' if re-elected in November, Greens internal polling has found.

A hundred ''green-leaning'' voters in Melbourne's western suburbs were questioned about their attitudes to the Brumby government by Roy Morgan Research on behalf of the Greens in January. Most were Labor voters who, at some point, had voted for or preferenced the Greens - the type of voter the Greens want to woo. Eighteen per cent said they feared inaction or apathy should the government be re-elected.

Eight per cent thought the government was ''doing a good job''.

The water crisis and lack of public transport emerged as the two biggest issues in the survey, which covered Footscray, Altona, Werribee and Taylors Lakes in the upper house district of the western metropolitan region. Greens MP Colleen Hartland won her upper house seat, delivering the Greens a share of the balance of power, by only 127 votes.

When asked what Victoria's biggest problem was, 32 per cent of those surveyed said transport. Mr Brumby acknowledged after last weekend's Altona byelection that public transport might have contributed to the 12 per cent swing against his government.

Twenty-eight per cent said the state's biggest problem was water, including drought and dam shortages. When asked what the government could improve, 17 per cent said transport, and 14 per cent each said health and education services.

Greens MP Greg Barber said: ''It's not about [Mr Brumby's] personality, it's about his government's record.''
