Nuclear power advocated

26 Feb, 2010 09:35 AM
FORMER Victorian government minister Theo Theophanous has used a farewell parliamentary speech to call for the state to consider nuclear power.

Mr Theophanous announced on Tuesday he would resign this week and used his final speech to argue the case for nuclear power in addressing climate change, reports The Australian Financial Review.

"We are mature enough to have a debate about nuclear power,'' the former energy minister said.

"Australia and Victoria cannot afford to miss out on the new technologies that nuclear power development will bring to many countries around the world."

Victoria should not be ruled out as a location for nuclear baseload power generation, he said.
