Melbourne Show: Holstein three-year-old the dairy star

24 Sep, 2009 09:21 AM
IN another break with tradition the organising committee for this year’s Melbourne Royal dairy events appointed a solo judge for the interbreed events rather than a panel comprising the judges from the individual breeds.

Entrusted with that role, David Patterson, from Larpent, had plenty to think about and in the process amended some of the results from earlier single breed judging.

In the junior heifers he reversed the places, preferring the older Beclah Park youngster to the younger calf that won the Holstein junior champion ribbon.

Likewise in the senior age group he promoted the reserve champion Holstein, Declan Paten’s Lightning Ridge Skychief Tabaret, with Jim Carson’s cracking Jersey champion taking the best vessel and reserve senior cow ribbons.

But there was no denying the star of the show was the outstanding Holstein intermediate champion which took the interbreed intermediate heifer ribbon, placed second to the more mature Jersey in the best vessel and then swept up the interbreed supreme dairy exhibit trophy.
