Vic dairy farmers tackle labour shortage

30/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
A group of young Victorian dairy farmers is tackling the labour shortage head on with an information day to be held today for employers and future employees.

According to the Victorian Farmers' Federation, 'There's Money in Milk' will show young people how to make some extra cash by getting work in the dairy industry.

The Young Dairy Development Program is running the day at Rochester.

It includes an information session and a tour of the Horkings Dairy.

YDDP representative, Andrea Jackman, says the day will show young people why relief milking is a great way to earn extra money.

"It's easy, requires no previous experience, the pay is great, and there's work available now," Ms Jackman said.

"This free workshop is for anyone wanting some extra cash, and feel they have what it takes to join Australia's third largest agricultural industry."

Ms Jackman stressed that the day isn't restricted to potential employees.

"This is a great opportunity for employers to come along and see who is out there and get some new relief milkers on their staff," she said.

* There's Money in Milk will be held on Wednesday July 30 from 12 noon at the Rochester Tennis Clubrooms. A tour of Horkings Dairy will start at 1.30pm. Contact Jon Holland 0412 848 505, jholland@vff.org.au.
