GM crops food security concern, says senior health regulator

16 Jun, 2009 02:46 PM
AUSTRALIA'S long-term food security is being severely compromised by genetically modified crops and the use of pesticides, according to a former senior health regulator from Canada.

Visiting Australia for the first time, Dr Shiv Chopra was in Canberra this week to launch his new book, Corrupt to the Core, about what he sees as the major threats to food safety from the use of "genetically manipulated foods, pesticides and herbicides, hormones and antibiotics in animal production systems".

Far from being the answer to higher yields or a drought-proofing option, Dr Chopra told a forum in Parliament that genetically modified organisms and pesticides in particular were a serious threat to public health.

He believes they are behind huge increases in cancer rates, neurological and reproductive disorders and breakdowns in immune systems.

He said rather than being under the watch of the Minister for Agriculture, GM crops should be the responsibility of the Minister for Health.

He told the forum that claims GM crops produce higher yields were nonsense and untrue.

And the proof of all these connections to cancer and other disorders is where?? Fear is always a best seller.

Another foreigner who doesn't know how things work here. The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, which approves GM crops for planting, is an independent statutory authority in the Dept of Health in Australia. So I'm sure that will allay Dr Chopra's concerns!

You only have to look at the research to see that GM crops damage the environment in the false assumption that yeild is increased. GM crops do not increase yeild. They only insure against the environmental impacts on crops such as drought, pests and weeds. Farms pay for this insurance through the buying of GM seed from companies - the crop in turn damages the environment and adds the unknown expense of eating crops because they have an increased propensity to damage cells by having excess bio toxins in the form of "built in pesticide or herbicide". Where is the research that specifically states that "eating pesticide or herbicide is safe"? One of the measurable effects of GM crops disaster is known as Colony Collapse Disorder where bees are 'disappearing' but 'only' in areas that propogate GM crops. So the quantifiable expense of GM seed is then inadvertantly passed onto the pollinated crop farmer and the end consumer in the form of health costs and the GM seed manufacturer gains the profit with no risk. Fortunately, the Aussie situation, isn't as bad as the US where the problem is systemic. Because we have only allowed planting of canola - but GM foods still sneak into the foodchain and the public don't know. At least make it law to label all packaging throughout the food processing chain that contain GM ingredients which will allow people to choose to eat GM or not. If the GM lobby think that GM is safe then they will not object to this measure as in the UK.

I didn't realise that a person can show up in Australia with 50+ years of scientific experience and be dismissed after a few line article as a "foreigner" who doesn't know anything and is simply trying to sell books. Is this how most feel in Aus? You must be so proud...

It's about time the media showed the real side of GMOs and the inherent dangers in such unnecessary and money driven poison. From increased allergies to major fertility and sterility issues two and three generations down, clearly GMOs are designed for one thing: money through increased disease and chronic degeneration. Time to give the middle finger to these idiot companies and grow our own food, won't matter what false "research" they can spin to prove their poison is fine.

Gene Ethics organised the tour by Canadian food safety expert Dr Shiv Chopra. His book 'Corrupt to the Core' tells of unsafe foods approved without adequate scientific data, during his 35 years as a senior scientist at Health Canada. "Food safety is a core issue of vital importance for all Australians. It is about the health of your children and the legacy you leave them," says Dr Chopra. "Genetically manipulated (GM) foods are linked to serious health risks. The use of hormones, pesticides and herbicides in industrial agriculture can trigger cancers and neurological disorders. You must ask your governments why they don't protect you from unsafe foods. "Australia needs to avoid the food policy mistakes made by Canada and the USA. The politicians and regulators in those countries repeatedly break their own food safety laws under pressure from the powerful food industry and put the health and well-being of people at risk," Dr Chopra says. "Australia and NZ should instead follow the European Union which has much higher standards and stronger laws on food production practices. The EU bans slaughterhouse wastes, hormones and antibiotics from animal production systems, Genetically Manipulated crops are rejected by shoppers and many governments, and synthetic pesticides are being widely phased out. EU standards are the way of the future because removal of these hazards from food makes the food supply organic and safe." "Something is badly wrong when Aldi, a major European-based supermarket chain, takes artificially coloured sweets out of its Australian supermarkets to protect Australian kids but the food regulator FSANZ (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) reconfirms its approval of these poisons. FSANZ must stop rubber stamping these and other foods that scientific evidence shows are unsafe," Dr Chopra concludes.

I applaud Dr Shiv Chopra for courageously exposing what I have already known for years – that there is massive corruption in government, including Australia, where politicians sell out the public to insidious multi-national corporations like Monsanto. If only more Australian’s were to wake up to the amount of criminal activity occurring in government there would be blood on the streets today.

I applaud Lucy Knight for having the intestinal fortitude to write, and have published, such an important news item.

To Johnno and Dan, wake up whilst you can. Placing your faith in the GTR is laughable. Don't be deceived by the propaganda peddled by those with an ulterior motive in destroying the clean image of Australian produce. Family farmers, consumers and the environment will be the big losers with GM crops. All GM crops must be declared noxious weeds.

Tony, I don't know where your fabricated "Facts" came from but go and talk to any Australian cotton grower. They have been using GM crops for over a decade. Over 95% of the crop is GM and there are no dying bees here, yields have steadily increased in cotton, less pesticide is being washed into waterways and there is increased biodiveristy on farm and in crops. Why don't you actually ask an expert who is using today successfully before making wild accusations with no base. There is no such peer reviewed data for the issues which you suggest.
