EUSTON, NSW, cropper Pat Healy (pictured with brother Ray) says despite having had crops washed out during the 2010 floods, he will still make less money from this year’s wheat harvest.
“We were pretty much washed out but we made more money because the prices for shot wheat were better than we are looking at this year,” he said.
Mr Healy and his son Josh, along with his brother Ray and nephew Damien, harvested 5000 hectares of Yitpi wheat this season, yielding an average 1.2 tonnes/ha.
The Healys have sold only 10 per cent of their grain so far, not to pleasing prices.
“Our quality varied a lot this harvest and protein was hard to find – about one-third of the crop went H2, while the remainder was ABW and ASW,” Mr Healy said.
“Unfortunately, the crook wheat we sold last year was nearly worth as much as the H2 sold this year.”
Mr Healy said the rest of the grain was in storage in the hope of a price rise but they would offload some soon for cashflow.
“It is very much looking like it is not going to rise, but it just depends how long you can hang on to it for,” he said.
