Bullocks draw big boys at Warrnambool

16 Mar, 2010 02:28 PM
IMPROVED bullock prices brought the big boys into the Warrnambool saleyards last week.

Among the yarding of bullocks were these Charolais bullocks, bred by Brian O’Halloran and Co agent Tim Healey, left, and finished by noted Broadwater bullock producer Des Purcell.

The bullocks were bought as 14-month-old calves by Mr Purcell about two years ago. Nine of the draft weighed in at 758 kilograms and sold at 175 cents a kg or $1326.50 a head to Teys Bros Naracoorte, while a single giant tipped the scales at 850 kgs and made 165 cents a kg or $1402.50.

Mr Purcell said the bullocks were run on black flat country off Lake Gorrie Road south of Macarthur and “wouldn’t know what hay was”. He said he had not sold bullocks since Christmas last year.

“It (the price) is better than 140 cents before Christmas.”

Mr Healey said the bullocks were a credit to Mr Purcell. They were bred out of Deep Creek cows by a Morgiana bull.

“I’ve bought another bull to breed them bigger and better,” Mr Healey said.

Other top bullock and grown steer lines included David Ware’s 15 17-18-month-old crossbred composite steers that weighed in at 540 kgs and sold for 185 cents a kg or $999.

Elders’ client S.D. Harris sold Hereford bullocks to 162 cents a kg or $1247 a head; Landmark sold D. and J. Nagorcka’s 728 kg Charolais steers for 175 cents a kg or $1274 a head; J. and J. Kelly sold K. and J. Bonnett’s Angus cross bullocks for 179.5 cents a kg or $1265 a head and SKBW sold Hereford bullocks for 169 cents or $1378.90 a head for A.N. McConnell.
