Charnock to disperse

01 Sep, 2008 03:42 PM
CHARNOCK, which this year topped the Hereford National at Wodonga with a $62,500 bull, will divest its stud herd in a single dispersal sale to be held on-property at its Rochford base on Friday, November 28.

Founded in 1972, the stud is owned by prominent business identity Hugh Morgan - a former director of the Reserve Bank – and wife Elizabeth.

Long-time manager Barry Godbolt this week confirmed the stud would be dispersed.

He said it had been a business decision for the Morgans who play to retain the stud’s home at Rochford and use it to run a commercial livestock enterprise.

Mr Godbolt and wife Joy will be staying on as managers.

“The reason for making the change this year is that the stud will really be going out on a high,” Mr Godbolt said.

Charnock has topped the market at two of the past three Hereford National sales – most recently in May with $62,500 Charnock Jackal – and had the National’s grand champion bull at three of the past six events.

“The dispersal will offer an opportunity for whiteface producers to secure animals from a successful herd, especially in the last decade,” Mr Godbolt said.

While they were hoping some buyers would use the opportunity to secure whole female lines of 10-15 animals, Mr Godbolt said there were also plenty of high-performing individuals that could make an impact on producers’ herds.

The sale will include 80 Hereford cows and calves, 10 dry Hereford cows, 20 joined B heifers and 20 unjoined C heifers.

The Poll portion of the stud – built up over the past seven years – will include 50 cows and calves, five dry cows, 10 joined B heifers and 10 unjoined C heifers.

Charnock will also sell off all its stud sires and some embryo packages.

Also up for grabs will be 10 C-drop Hereford and Poll Hereford bulls – bulls that otherwise would have been sold at the respective breed’s National sales at Wodonga and Dubbo, NSW.

Inspections will be conducted from 2pm to 5pm on the day prior to the sale, November 27.

The sale will be conducted by Elders and Landmark
