Favourable season drives prices at Colac

8/09/2008 7:14:00 PM
THE GREEN pick brightening the Colac countryside and the onset of spring put a spurr in the step of local producers who keenly contested the offering of 1500 head on Friday.

Buyers were out in force and, determined to secure stock – particularly weaners – pushed rates to solid levels across the mixed weaner and grown steer sections.

“It was a tremendous sale – we were very, very happy with it,” Jamie McConachy, Charles Stewart said.

Adding in the fact that most cattle were kept in the immediate area, “made the day even greater”, according to Mr McConachy.

The heavier end of the steers weighed in at 454 kilograms and sold up to $800 or 176c/kg for Fred Bentley, Dreeite, who traded in 10 Angus, 16-18 months, with 10 seconds at $750 or 177c/kg, average $775.

Weaner heifers enjoyed the strong run of their brothers to fetch a top of $615 with cows and calves to $1230.
