TWO purebred Charolais steers will make the trip from the Koonwarra saleyards to Glenormiston College this week, after being generously donated to the agricultural school at the Leongatha store market last week.
The steers were chosen by the Charolais Society’s Victorian branch and donated by cattle buyer and breed expert Ron Goff, together with producer Kevin Whelan, Silverbrae Charolais’, Outtrim.
“We really just wanted to give the school a helping hand in sourcing cattle for the carcase competitions,” Sue Pike of the Victorian Charolais Society said.
Laurie Hickey, who teaches agricultural at Glenormiston College, said the donation was fantastic and would help students learn more about nutrition, as well as show preparation.
The two steers will go on a special pasture-based feeding program for seven months in preparation for the Royal Melbourne Show’s carcase competition in September.
“We are absolutely ecstatic and delighted that they recognised the important work we do here and were able to help us out,” he said.
“We’ve never had purebred Charolais before, so we are pretty excited.”
The steers would also assist students in learning more about feed deficiencies and how to maximise the growth of an animal.
The animals were secured in a charitable final bid by Mr Goff on a $600 bid - against a strong field of buyers. Mr Whelan - who donated one of the animals - bred the Charolais steers on his Outtrim property. He said he was pleased he was able to make a positive contribution to the agricultural school.
