GROWN steers sold to $784 or 176 cents a kilogram at the Warrnambool monthly store sale last Friday, with yearling steers to $755 or 195c. Young steers sold to $624 or 200c.
The 1800 head yarding comprised 1100 steers, 410 unjoined heifers, 195 cows with calves 1-6 months and 110 mixed age Angus cows calving to Angus bulls.
Gerald Madden, secretary of the Warrnambool Agents Association said the yarding presented in their late winter coats and ranged from light to forward store condition.
“While demand lacked the impetus of the last sale, a month ago, several pen lots made rates equal with the higher rates of the August sale.”
Competition was mostly from local areas and the South East of South Australia.
Yearling unjoined heifers sold from $600-$605 with younger heifers $420-$520 and very light and very young $360-$410.
Better cows and calves sold from $1020-$1130, with other lighter conditioned and F1 cows and calves $750-$950.
Moyne Falls, Macarthur, sold a draft of 110 mixed aged Angus cows with calves and calving with 52 making $780 and 18 making $810.
Phil Keane of Saffen Kerr Bowen Wilson said it was a reasonably solid sale with older steers not making the liveweight rates of younger steers.
He said older steers made 160-182c with lighter steers to 200c. Crossbred steers made 155-160c.
He said there was a very god run of heifers with the first 150-200 head exceptional, with a bit of weight in them. These made 170-180c equivalent.
