Heat and uncertainty in the export market played their role in the result at the Corcoran Parker's Yea store market last week.
Punters hesitated on the heavier end of cattle, but as agents stepped through the pens and weights got lighter, bidding increased to see the lighter end sold at fully firm rates.
AH Clark, Tinnara, topped the steer portion of the market with a pen of 19 Hereford which sold to $738, picked up by prolific buyer Brendan Jacobson, CP, Alexandra.
J McCooey's 41 Herefords topped at $685, with seconds at $660, and Doogallook Pastoral Co sold thier 306 Herefords to a $682 top and an average of $511.
While the tops of the Doogallook draft were 15-16 months, most were aged from 5-6 months.
The Ironbark-blood steers were sold alongside 239 heifers, which fetched a top of $520 and averaged $419.
Valley Views sold Angus steer weaners to $640 across a line of 71 head, which averaged $610, and topped the heifer market at $585.
R and K Elliott sold 65 Charolais to $600, average $538.
Trevor Parker, Corcoran Parker, Wodonga, quoted the heavier end of steers sold $20-$30 cheaper, but the light end fully firm.
