THE inaugural Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) Heifer Challenge will be held during this year’s Stock & Land Beef Week, with the aim of highlighting the quality of herd replacement females throughout Victoria.
The competition has been developed to encourage stud breeders to display their top heifers – an important part of their future breeding operation.
Competitors will display a pen of 10 registered heifers that will be judged on evenness, breed traits and their potential as replacement stud breeders.
RASV general manager of exhibitions and events, Joanne Jeffery, said the society founded the competition as a way of supporting Beef Week and reinforcing its interest in the beef sector.
“It is also part of our engagement with our rural partners, in addition to the Royal Melbourne Show, where we have a relevant stud beef cattle and beef carcase competition,” Ms Jeffery said.
“The RASV has a long tradition of holding on-farm competitions during the year.”
Ms Jeffery said the competition encouraged improvment – a popular concept, with more than 80 studs entering the competition.
“There is also $3000 in prizemoney for the winner and $1500 for the runner up, so that’s a fairly good incentive to be involved.”
