Northwest Tasmanian buyers remained is control at the second of the Tasmanian calf sales held at Powranna near Launceston on Friday.
In a sale of 1610 head conducted by Elders, prices paid for the better end of the steer drafts remained much the same, averaging about 200c/kg and making to a top of $660 a head.
A small team of interstate buyers mainly from Victoria attended the sale, however their presence was again barely noticed until the heifer sale when the Elders Charlton feedlot flew the flag along with the company's Leongatha branch.
Heavy weaner steers made from just under $600 to $640/head, medium weights $500-$565, and light weaner steers $390- $490 for an average close to $450.
Heavy weaner heifers made $480-$505, medium weights $370-$430, and light heifers $370- $375.
The sale offered considerably fewer cattle than this sale a year ago, however quality was generally good despite the tight season, with many of the weaners in the sale's first row showing plenty of bloom.
