Melbourne Show - You can teach an old cow new tricks

25 Sep, 2009 06:32 PM
You might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks but old cows can be superstars.

At least that’s the experience of Graeme Podbury and Bev Crowley, Lilliput Lowlines, Tylden, who won supreme Australian Lowline exhibit at the Melbourne Royal with a seven-year-old cow that had never been to a show before.

Lilliput Dame Margo was a last minute addition to the Lilliput show team after another of their cows got injured.

“She’d never been shown and we weren’t sure if she was too old to learn how,” said Mr Podbury.

“And we still weren’t sure when we got here.”

But Margo belied her show experience – or lack thereof – gliding to a supreme victory.

“If we got her here and could get her around the ring, we thought she’d do well – although we thought her daughter might have beaten her,” Mr Podbury said.

(Margo’s daughter placed first in her class).

Margo was shown with her fifth calf at foot – an impressive calf that attracted buyer interest straight after judging.
