SUPPLY fell by 23% at Bairnsdale on Thursday with most of this occurring in the young cattle sections. The usual buyers were present and price trends reflected the quality which was varied across the sale.

There were 110 vealers penned with only a few better quality lots. The higher quality sold from 180c to 230c while others sold from 140c to 178c/kg.

Of the 200 yearlings penned better quality steers sold from 179c to 204c/kg. Similarly, good quality heifers made between 165c and 185c/kg.

The grown steers from 169c to 188c/kg with an average of 175.4c/kg. The manufacturing steers sold between 138c and 172c/kg.

A yarding of 294 heavy cows of good to over conditioned quality sold to the same competition at prices equal to 2c/kg lower.

This saw most of the cows make from 128c to 143.6c/kg. The leaner cows of better quality made 118c to 127c, and cows which

were over conditioned made between 86c to 126c/kg. The carcass weight price average was estimated to be 264c/kg.
