17 Nov, 2008 12:19 PM
Although buyers appeared reluctant on Friday to force the store cattle market at Mt Gambier, SA, due to raised seasonal concerns, prices achieved were mostly steady, and up to $20- $30 a head higher for the district's first major offering weaner steer calves.

Of the yarding of 1549 head, a small selection grown steers made to a top of $660 for a pen of EU types, while the better runs of weaner steers made from $520 and topped at $610, while smaller younger drafts sold upwards of $464 a head.

Butchers and feedlot operators were the main supporters of the yearling and weaner heifer yardings, as those mostly fetched an estimated 150-165c/kg (live)whilst selling to a top of $565 a head.

A useful penning of breeding cows, with young calves at foot achieved prices slightly above split value.
