TRADE buyers picked up quality weaner heifers averaging 160-170 cents a kilogram at last week’s Euroa store sale.
David Simpson, Elders, Euroa, said heifers currently offered buyers better quality at a cheaper rate than steers.
He said 250-300kg heifers were being purchased to feed and fatten into the spring.
"You can buy heifers a bit cheaper, fatten a bit easier and turn over is pretty good," Mr Simpson said.
He said traders saw the opportunity to pick up heifers, before rain arrives and drives up prices.
"Once we get this three to four inches, it will kick the job on a little bit," he said.
Overall, he said the sale had finished well, compared with other regional markets, with the bulk of the 600 head yarding coming from the north.
"Considering the dry conditions, the market has held up well," he said.
Mr Simpson quoted steers averaging at 165-170c/kg, with some calves back around the 150c/kg mark.
Grown steers sold from $520-$600 a head, while weaner calves made up to $500-$540.
Weaner steers averaged $450-$460.
