WEANER SALES: Euro steers to 185c at Casterton

08 Jan, 2010 06:11 PM
Heavier steers generally made to 170-180 cents a kilogram at Casterton today, where a yarding of 3300 head rounded out a big week of weaner sales in the Western District.

About 17,000 head were offered over five days and seven sales at Hamilton and Casterton with the market for steers generally averaging about 170-171c early in the week and adding steam as the sales progressed.

At Casterton’s Friday sales, prices backed off about 10c ($30 a head) from Thursday’s heights at Hamilton with most pens in the heavier drafts selling between 162 and 183c.

“Yesterday’s 10c gain proved to be a ripple not a tsunami,” said Stock & Land store market analyst Don Story, who has been at the yards for all seven sales at Hamilton and Casterton.

Euro-cross steers topped at 185c for a pen of Simmental-cross steers offered by the Kuch family, Rosebank, Casterton, and snapped up by Jason Fry of Elders Warragul.

Neville and Alison McClure, Mooree, reaped rewards of up to 183c for their EU-accredited and weaned Hereford draft with the tops secured by Koolamurt.

Mr Story said about a third of the yarding was EU-accredited with small premiums evident for well-weaned, well-presented calves.

Sim Flanders, Elders Casterton, said the yarding of steers had sold in line with expectations.
