Yea cattle sale ahead of expectations

15/09/2008 6:01:00 PM
A LARGE yarding of spring-drop weaners at Yea on Friday sold ahead of expectations in a very solid sale.

In a terrific result for local producers who are now desperate for a soaking shower of rain, older steers reached a top of $830 and steer weaners $725, both on Angus.

A large portion of the yarding were spring 2007-drop steers, yarded because of the dry conditions in the area.

These cattle would normally have been retained until December-January, to be sold direct to feeders, according to Adam Mountjoy, Rodwells, Mansfield.

“It’s getting tough – we’re desperate for a shower of rain now, especially run-off rain to fill our dams,” Mr Mountjoy said.

Heifers fetched a top of $615 and cows and calves, riding on current strong rates achieved at prime markets, sold to a top of $1050.
