WITH the final fall of the hammer, over half a million dollars worth of top merino genetics had found new homes throughout Australia at the Hamilton ram sale this week.
Amidst a backdrop of constant chatter of the upcoming mulesing deadline, and the uncertainty of a decent spring, a strong undercurrent became evident throughout the sale, with a surge towards plainer bodied rams being high on the shopping list.
Buyers picked out 329 rams for an average of $1691.
Top price honours went to John, Jenny and Trent Carter, Wallaloo Park, Marnoo, who sold their short wool Merino ram for $17,000.
Eventual winner of the bidding war was Will Lynch, Boorana Stud, Woorndo, who secured the 17-month-old ram.
John Carter was extremely pleased with the addition of this new client.
"He just saw the ram and knew it was the one he wanted," he said.
The ram sired by CH Pearler, boasted a micron reading of 19.1, C.V 18.3, S.D 3.5, spinning fineness of 18.2 and a comfort factor of 99.5, carrying it all on his 107kg frame.
Wallaloo Park backed up the sale with a second ram sold for $10,000.
Phil Toland, Toland Merinos, Violet Town, also had a strong sale, selling all ten rams including a polled ram for $10,500 to Brookong Investments, Lockhart, NSW.
Elders auctioneer, Ross Milne, was extremely pleased (and also a little hoarse) at the end of the auction, after having a bout of uncertainty before the auction with no way of knowing how the sale was going to wash up.
"We're very pleased with the results, which have gone beyond everyone’s expectations."
