Ballarat crossbred ewe sale stalls after promising start topping $213

15 Jan, 2010 11:01 AM
IT was buyers' market at Ballarat's crossbred ewe sale Thursday when demand for young ewes got away to a solid start before fading quickly after the opening lane of sales.

Offering a quality penning of 26,000 in idyllic weather conditions, the opening lane of sales made anticipated values between $185 and a market top of $213 a head.

But once the premium inquiry was satisfied, remaining sales of one-and-a-half year-olds quickly slipped back into a trading range of $140-$165, or $10-$20/head below expectation.

Ewe lambs met keen inquiry throughout, with joinable size lines sold from $130 to $162 a head, while smaller backgrounder lambs made $90-$125.
