Joined Merino ewes sold for $188 a head at Urana, in the NSW Riverina, in what is believed to be a record price for the district.
The line of 550 Sims/Collinsville-blood ewes were Yanga Station-bred, August-shorn and depastured to White Suffolk rams, and all were scanned in lamb.
The first pen, as offered by the Smith family, Bimbadeen, Urana, were all scanned in lamb carrying twins, and these sold for $188 to Andrew Turner, Tumbalong, Gundagai, NSW.
The following lines, which scanned with only lamb, were sold for $172 to Elders, Finley.
Speaking by phone from Urana, Stock & Land markets analyst Murray Arnel reported that the sale of 12,000 head saw very strong demand for any type of breeding ewe.
He said it was difficult to buy any type of Merino breeding ewe for under $130.
2009-drop Merino wethers in the sale reached a high of $108 and were sold to the slaughter trade, with restocker wethers generally making $70-$80.
