22 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
A TOTAL of 7726 second-cross lambs sold under the hammer to $120 at the 10th annual Tamar Valley sale in Tasmania last week.

Three different vendors – Greenhythe Pastoral, Weymouth Pastoral and Effingham – participated in the annual event, which achieved an overall average of $81 a head.

Greenhythe Pastoral, Hillwood, received the top price of $120, paid by Wallabadah, Wood-bourn, Cressy.

Greenhythe sold 1554 White Suffolk and Suffolk-composite lambs at an average of $87.

Stewart Archer, Weymouth Pastoral, Pipers River, offloaded 2811 White Suffolk-Border Leicester-Merinos to $96, av $86.

Elders Bendigo agent Greg Harrington provided mainland support at Weymouth and paid the top money on the day.

Winston Archer, Effingham, Low Head, saw his run of 1617 Poll Dorset-Romney lambs top at $119, av $85.

JBS Australia shelled out the money for the top Effingham pen.

Winston also sold 797 Southdown-BLMs to $88, av $58, as well as 957 Romney-BLMs to $94, av $69.

Both Archers said they were happy with the result, despite prices being $25 softer than last year.

β€œThe market was more realistic for store lambs, given current conditions,” Winston said.

The Archer families also donated the proceeds of two pens of lambs to the St Michaels Association, a local Launceston charity that provides high-quality support and education for people with intellectual disabilities.

The first pen of 10 Suffolk-cross lambs made $121, while the second pen of 10 made $120.

Both pens were purchased by JBS Australia.
