John and Diana Lynch, Charters Towers bought the historic Aldborough House in Charters Towers for $580,000 when it went to auction last weekend.

The house, which has sat dormant for many years, is more than a hundred years old and was believed to be one of the first houses in Charters Towers to have electricity.

There was intense interest in the house leading up to the auction with more than 100 inspections taking place, and hundreds of people filing through for a look during an open day.

Many of the antiques from within the house were also sold at auction.

Matt Geaney of selling agents, Geaney’s, Charters Towers, said the auction was a great success and all the antiques sold strongly.

Buyers travelled from local areas and Townsville for the auction, with interest also extending from New South Wales.

Mr Geaney said the underbidder on the house was a film maker from Townsville who had plans to film a restoration of the grand homestead.
