27 Oct, 2009 01:19 PM
NORTH East vineyards have had success at the Australian Small Wine-makers Show, taking out the top award in four categories.

Anderson Winery won the gold medal for bottle-fermented sparkling red of any vintage at the show, which ended in Queensland last week.

Pfeiffer Wines won gold for the best sweet white fortified, excluding white muscat, while Stanton and Killeen won for port of any vintage.

Scion Vineyard’s 2006 durif was also labelled the best in its category.

The region’s success included two bronze medals for Auldstone Cellars, and one bronze each for Battely Wine, Granite Range Estate and Souter’s Vineyard.

Pfeiffer Wines also received six silver and five bronze medals; Stanton and Killeen also won six bronze.

Boggy Creek Vineyards won one silver medal and Anderson Winery also collected two silver and two bronze.

Winemaker Howard Anderson said the winery’s award for best sparkling red had pleased him the most.

“It flies the flag for Rutherglen a bit,” he said.
