 Shearers union recommends wage rise

Shearers union recommends wage rise

21 Jun, 2010 05:00 AM
THE Shearers and Rural Workers Union (SRWU) has released its new Recommended Minimum Rates for shearing industry workers, to come into force on 1st July 2010.

The Shearing Industry Workers have not had a pay rise since October 2008 and have since seen the introduction of a 38 hour week, dating from 1st January 2010.

The SRWU rate will rise to $255 per 100 sheep shorn (with associated rises in crutching rates) and shed staff rates will rise to $48 per 2 hour run.

The Federal Government and Fair Work Australia’s Award modernisation has also seen a rise in the travelling allowance to 74 cents per kilometre and the introduction of overtime payments for shed staff.

The SRWU sees the award modernisation improvements of the 38 hour week, introduction of overtime payments and the associated pay rises as small steps toward better ‘quality of life’ in a hard industry and hopes this will lead to more young people seeking employment in the shearing industry, as well as encouraging experienced workers to remain.

"Pay rises as small steps toward better ‘quality of life’ in a hard industry and hopes this will lead to more young people seeking employment in the shearing industry." I welcome the pay rise for shearing, and shed hands. BUT a travelling allowance to 74 cents per kilometre is way too much. The staff could make a living just driving to work at that rate. Unless it is one way only??
