Single wool selling centre for southern Australia

10 Dec, 2009 02:45 PM
SOUTHERN wool growers selling centre options will be slashed to a single centre as of June 30 next year.

However Australian Wool Handling Victorian state manager David Brierly says its Frederick Street complex at Laverton is more than capable of becoming the sole Victorian selling centre.

AWEX chief executive Mark Grave confirmed last Friday that it would not continue its 16-year lease at the Brooklyn centre because there was no longer a “reasonable commercial basis” under which the head lease could be sustained.

In a statement to its members obtained by Stock & Land Mr Grave said the decision reflected the realisation the Victorian Wool Centre was no longer sustainable.

“This decision will deliver the industry with a single set of sales rooms in Fremantle, Melbourne and Newcastle.”

Mr Brierly said he was unsure if sales would retract from two days to one.
